ST. LOUIS -- Carlos Martinez allowed just five hits over 6 2/3 innings and drove in one run with one of his two hits to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-3 win over the Chicago Cubs on Saturday.
Jedd Gyorko helped Martinez even his record at 3-3 with his seventh homer of the year leading off the fourth inning off Jon Lester, breaking a 1-1 tie.
Tommy Pham drove in two runs for the Cardinals with a single in the fourth and a two-out double off reliever Pedro Strop in the sixth. He then scored on a single by Magneuris Sierra, who has hit safely in his first five games in the major leagues.
Martinez gave up just three hits through the first six innings before Ian Happ, making his major league debut, knocked Martinez out of the game with a two-run homer in the seventh, his first career hit. That cut the Cardinals' lead from 5-1 to 5-3.
Martinez struck out seven and walked four. Trevor Rosenthal pitched the eighth and Seung Hwan Oh the ninth, earning his 10th save.
The first two runs of the game were driven in by the starting pitchers. In the second, Javier Baez reached on a fielder's choice groundout before scoring on a double by Lester off the center field wall.
The hit was the fourth in 15 career at-bats for Lester off Martinez, while he is just 8-for-157 against every other pitcher in his career. The double was the fourth of his career and produced his ninth career RBI.
In the third, Martinez returned the favor with a single on a hit that didn't go halfway to the mound. His suicide-squeeze bunt drove in Pham, who walked, stole second and went to third on a throwing error by catcher Willson Contreras. Lester fielded the bunt but his attempt to flip the ball toward the plate with his glove was late.
Martinez also doubled leading off the fifth but was left stranded as Lester struck out the next three batters.
Lester (1-2) left the game after a two-out walk in the sixth. He allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits while walking four and recording nine strikeouts.
The Cubs had a run taken off the scoreboard in the fifth when Happ was called out for interference because of a hard slide at second base while attempting to break up a double play.
