ST. LOUIS -- Rookie third baseman Christian Arroyo ripped a bases-loaded, two-run double to break a scoreless tie in the 13th inning Saturday night, lifting the San Francisco Giants to a 3-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.
Arroyo's blast off the base of the left-center-field wall came on the 12th pitch of his at-bat against Kevin Siegrist (0-1) after singles by Buster Posey, Brandon Crawford and Eduardo Nunez loaded the bases. It was the first time in the game San Francisco pushed a runner into scoring position.
Pinch hitter Nick Hundley added a sacrifice fly to cap the rally as the Giants (19-25) won for the seventh time in eight games, handing St. Louis (21-19) its fourth straight defeat.
Hunter Strickland (1-1) pitched two shutout innings to earn the win, and Mark Melancon wrapped it up in the 13th for his eighth save despite allowing a two-out RBI single to Stephen Piscotty.
The Cardinals wasted an excellent start from Carlos Martinez, who pitched nine shutout innings for the first time in his major league career. He gave up just two hits, walked one and struck out five in his 93-pitch gem.
San Francisco starter Jeff Samardzija was just as brilliant in a no-decision performance. He worked eight scoreless innings, scattering five hits and walking none while whiffing eight.
Samardzija required 28 pitches while facing the minimum through three innings, and he permitted just three hits through five innings.
The Cardinals put men on the corners with two outs in the fourth when Piscotty was hit by a pitch and Jedd Gyorko singled, but Yadier Molina grounded out to first on a 3-2 pitch.
Martinez retired 15 of the first 16 batters he faced, allowing just a one-out single to Joe Panik in the fourth, and reached the sixth inning having thrown just 47 pitches.
NOTES: St. Louis recalled RF Stephen Piscotty (hamstring) from his rehabilitation assignment at Double-A Springfield and inserted him into the lineup, and he went 1-for-5. Piscotty was injured May 4 against Milwaukee. ... San Francisco INF Conor Gillaspie (back spasms) finished 1-for-3 on Friday in his first game of a rehab stint with Triple-A Sacramento. He has been on the 10-day disabled list since May 11. ... The Cardinals traded 1B Matt Adams to Atlanta about an hour before game time Saturday, receiving corner infield prospect Juan Yepez from the Braves. Adams, batting .292 with a homer and seven RBI in 48 at-bats, should play every day for the Braves with 1B Freddie Freeman (wrist) on the DL for an extended period.
