SEATTLE -- Pinch hitter Guillermo Heredia singled home the winning run with two outs in the ninth inning as the Seattle Mariners defeated the Chicago White Sox 5-4 on Thursday night.
Jarrod Dyson came home on Heredia's hit, his third run of the game, as the Mariners (20-22) improved to 13-6 at home. The White Sox (17-22) lost for the 10th time in 12 games, and they took their seven road defeat in a row.
Taylor Motter led off the bottom of the ninth with a single off Chicago reliever Dan Jennings (2-1). Motter was forced at second on a Dyson bunt attempt.
Carlos Ruiz grounded what appeared to be a potential inning-ending double play to third baseman Todd Frazier, but Dyson beat the throw to second though Ruiz was out at first. After an intentional walk to Jean Segura, Heredia came on for Ben Gamel and lined a single to right field, with Dyson easily racing home.
It was the only run of the game that didn't score via a home run. Dyson and Segura went deep for Seattle, while Matt Davidson, Frazier and Tim Anderson homered for Chicago.
Nick Vincent (2-1) threw one scoreless inning to earn the win.
Sam Gaviglio pitched five scoreless innings in his first major league start for the Mariners.
Gaviglio was the 10th starting pitcher used by the Mariners this season, the most in the major leagues. The only time Seattle used more by this point in the season was in 1977 as an expansion franchise.
The right-hander, who pitched for Team Italy in the World Baseball Classic, allowed three hits and one walk while striking out two. It was the second straight scoreless outing by a Mariners starter, as Christian Bergman went 7 1/3 shutout innings Wednesday against the Oakland A's.
Gaviglio left with a 4-0 lead, but the Seattle bullpen couldn't hold it.
The White Sox pulled within 4-2 on Davidson's two-run homer off reliever Casey Lawrence, who was making his Mariners debut, in the seventh inning. It was Davidson's seventh home.
After retiring the first two batters in the eighth, Seattle reliever Dan Altavilla allowed back-to-back solo homers by Frazier and Anderson to tie it. It was the fourth homer for both Frazier and Anderson.
Dyson opened the scoring leading off the third, lining the first pitch from Chicago starter Dylan Covey over the right field wall. It was Dyson's second home run of the season.
Dyson also played a big role as the Mariners extended their lead to 4-0 in the fifth. With two outs, Dyson slapped a single into left field and then stole second and third. After a walk to Ruiz, Segura hit a three-run homer, his fourth of the season, over the manual scoreboard in the left-field corner.
Covey almost didn't make it out of the first inning, but not because he was pitching poorly.
With one out, Nelson Cruz lined a one-hopper to the mound that glanced off Covey's right knee and caromed right to second baseman Yolmer Sanchez, who completed the 1-4-3 groundout.
White Sox trainer Herm Schneider and manager Rick Renteria came out to check on Covey, who remained in the game after a couple of warmup pitches to make sure he was OK.
