SEATTLE -- Jean Segura's infield single scored the winning run in the bottom of the 13th inning as the Seattle Mariners defeated the Boston Red Sox 6-5 Tuesday night at Safeco Field.
The Mariners scored twice with two outs in the 13th after the Red Sox scored in the top of the inning. Seattle (51-51) reached the .500 mark and sent Boston (55-47) to a season-high fourth consecutive defeat.
With Seattle trailing 5-4 and one out in the bottom of the 13th, Mitch Haniger drew a walk from Doug Fister (0-5), and Ben Gamel hit into a fielder's choice. Guillermo Heredia fouled off a couple of two-strike pitches before lining a single to right field, with Gamel taking third. Gamel then scored the tying run on a wild pitch, with Heredia advancing from first to third.
Segura then hit a chopper up the middle that Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts fielded. Bogaerts tried to make an off-balance throw to first, but it wasn't nearly in time to get the speedy Segura.
Seattle's Tony Zych (5-2) pitched two innings to earn the victory.
Both teams had a chance to win it in extra innings.
The Red Sox took a 5-4 lead as Sandy Leon singled home the tiebreaking run with two outs in the top of the 13th.
Hanley Ramirez led off with a single that fell just in front of Mariners right fielder Haniger. After Zych struck out the next two batters, Ramirez advanced to second on a wild pitch.
After a walk to Chris Young, Leon hit a soft liner to left. Gamel charged the ball and made a strong throw in an attempt to get Ramirez at the plate, but the runner slid home safely as catcher Mike Zunino bobbled the throw.
In the top of the 11th, Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a slow roller to the right side of the infield that went off the end of Robinson Cano's glove for an error. Bogaerts then walked.
Left-hander James Pazos got pinch hitter Young to fly out to right field before Leon grounded into a fielder's choice after a 12-pitch at-bat, putting runners at first and third for rookie Rafael Devers. Pazos struck out Devers on three straight pitches to end the inning.
The Mariners threatened in the bottom of the 10th against Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel.
Danny Valencia, who struck out in his first three at-bats and grounded into a double play in his fourth, led off the 10th with a single to right field.
Valencia was lifted for pinch runner Danny Espinosa, making his Mariners debut. After several pickoff attempts by Kimbrel, Espinosa took off and stole second as catcher Leon double-pumped and didn't make a throw.
Kimbrel struck out Cano and Nelson Cruz, the Nos. 3-4 hitters in the Mariners order, before walking Kyle Seager on a 3-2 count to put runners at first and second. Kimbrel then struck out Haniger to end the inning.
The Mariners tied the score at 4-4 when Zunino led off the bottom of the seventh with a home run to center field, his 15th of the season. Zunino hit a 2-1 pitch from Red Sox reliever Heath Hembree just slightly to the left of straightaway center, a 413-foot shot.
Staked to a 3-0 lead, Seattle right-hander Felix Hernandez cruised through the first five innings, allowing one run on two hits and throwing only 64 pitches.
But Felix lost his command and didn't make it out of the sixth.
Devers, making his major league debut and batting ninth, led off with a walk. After Hernandez struck out Mookie Betts on a pitch in the dirt, Andrew Benintendi also walked. Dustin Pedroia followed with a two-run double down the left field line to tie the score 3-3.
After Ramirez grounded out, Bradley lined a run-scoring single into right-center, giving the Red Sox a 4-3 lead.
That was it for Hernandez, who needed 31 pitches to record his only two outs in the sixth.
The Red Sox had only one hit until the fourth, when Ramirez hammered a 1-1 pitch from Hernandez off the out-of-town scoreboard in left field. The homer, Ramirez's 17th of the season, was measured at 414 feet.
After a 1-2-3 first inning, Red Sox starter Drew Pomeranz ran into trouble in the second.
With one out, Seager got an infield single, hitting the ball between first baseman Mitch Moreland and second baseman Pedroia. An out later, Gamel walked before Heredia hit a three-run homer, his sixth of the season. Heredia turned on an 0-1 pitch from Pomeranz and hit it just over the fence down the left field line for a 3-0 advantage.
