MILWAUKEE -- Yadier Molina had three hits, including two home runs, and Luke Weaver struck out eight as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-4 on Wednesday night at Miller Park.

Weaver, making his second start in place of injured Adam Wainwright, worked 6 1/3 innings and held Milwaukee to two runs, five hits and two walks.

Weaver (1-1) didn't give the Brewers many chances to make noise offensively, but when they did get an opportunity, they failed to take advantage of it.

Milwaukee went 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position and has only three hits in their last 46 chances in those situations overall.

Brewers starter Brent Suter (2-2) had been on a roll since taking over for Chase Anderson but was charged with five runs, eight hits and a walk while striking out seven in 5 1/3 innings.

Eric Thames put the Brewers up early, hitting his 25th home run of the season with one out in the first inning, but the lead didn't last long.

St. Louis tied the score at 1 in the second inning when Luke Voit bounced into a bases-loaded force with nobody out. Suter got out of the inning without further damage, but Molina's leadoff homer in the fourth gave the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.

Molina struck again in the sixth, leading off with his second homer of the night, and Jose Martinez and Voit followed with back-to-back singles.

Suter struck out Randal Grichuk to bring his day to an end, but after Jeremy Jeffress retired Weaver, Kolten Wong doubled home two runs, making it 5-1.

The Brewers managed to get one back in the seventh on an RBI single from Hernan Perez that chased Weaver.

Jesus Aguilar got the Brewers within a run on a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the eighth, his 10th home run of the season.

Trevor Rosenthal snuffed out the threat and then came back with a scoreless ninth for his seventh save.

NOTES: The Brewers added RHP Jeremy Jeffress to their active roster, two days after he was acquired from the Texas Rangers. Jeffress takes the spot of RHP Paolo Espino, who was optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs on Tuesday night. ... Cardinals RHP Adam Wainwright threw a bullpen session as he works through a bout of tightness in his back. ... Brewers RHP Matt Garza (4-5, 3.83 ERA) will come off the disabled list (strained calf) and start Thursday afternoon in the series finale against Cardinals RHP Michael Wacha (8-4, 3.71).
