WASHINGTON -- Brian Goodwin led off the eighth inning with a home run as the Washington Nationals came back to beat the Miami Marlins 3-2 on Thursday night to take three of four games in the series.
It was the 13th homer of the year for Goodwin, who went deep to right against reliever Junichi Tazawa (1-2). Goodwin had two hits Thursday, and 17 of his 24 hits since July 17 have been for extra bases.
Trailing 2-0 after five, the Nationals tied the game in the sixth. Goodwin had an RBI single, and Bryce Harper laced a run-scoring double.
Miami's Jarlin Garcia came on with two outs and retired Daniel Murphy on a ground ball for the final out with two runners on base to keep the game tied.
First-place Washington (68-45) is 15 games ahead of the Marlins (53-60), who are 6-7 against the Nationals this year, in the National League East.
Washington starter Tanner Roark went six innings and allowed two runs on four hits with five walks and four strikeouts.
Miami starter Dan Straily gave up two runs and four hits in 5 2/3 innings. He has never beaten the Nationals in five starts.
The winning pitcher was Ryan Madson (2-0 with Washington), who retired all three batters in the eighth after Brandon Kintzler pitched a scoreless seventh.
Sean Doolittle tossed the ninth to get his seventh save with the Nationals. He allowed a one-out double to Miguel Rojas before retiring Dee Gordon (two hits) for the final out as Andrew Stevenson made a diving catch in left near the foul line.
Giancarlo Stanton, the major leagues' home run leader, smashed a two-run shot to left off Roark in the third to give the Marlins a 2-0 lead.
It was his 39th homer of the season and the 19th of his career at Nationals Park, the most of any opposing player. He leads the majors in homers since the All-Star break with 13, and he went deep for the third time in the four-game series.
The Marlins left the bases loaded in the fifth as Roark got Tyler Moore, a former Washington first baseman, on a fielder's choice for the final out.
The only hit Straily allowed in the first five innings was a single by Matt Wieters in the third.
Washington entered the game with a .275 team batting average, the best mark in the National League.
