NEW YORK -- Todd Frazier hit a tiebreaking single with nobody out in the bottom of the eighth inning as the New York Yankees pulled off a stunning comeback and beat the Boston Red Sox 5-4 on Friday night, ending their longtime rival's season-high eight-game winning streak.

Blanked for seven innings, the Yankees came alive against Addison Reed (0-1) in the eighth. After Brett Gardner was hit on the foot, Aaron Hicks lifted a full count slider into the first few rows of the right field seats near the foul pole to make it a one-run game.

The Yankees had runners at first and second after Gary Sanchez singled and Aaron Judge walked. Reed was replaced by Joe Kelly, who gave up a bloop single to Didi Gregorius to tie the game at 3-3.

Four pitches later, Frazier blooped Kelly's 100 mph fastball in front of left fielder Andrew Beintendi as Judge scored. The Yankees loaded the bases and added insurance when Ronald Torreyes lifted a sacrifice fly.

The extra run proved crucial when Aroldis Chapman loaded the bases on three straight walks and Benintendi lifted a sacrifice fly. The Yankees recorded two outs on the play when Hicks made a strong throw from left field and Frazier tagged Eduardo Nunez.

Following a 67-second replay review, Chapman notched his 15th save by retiring Mitch Moreland.

Before pulling off the comeback, the Yankees did little offensively. Doubles by Hicks and Torreyes accounted for their only hits until the eighth.

Those hits came against Eduardo Rodriguez, who was in line for his first win since returning from a knee injury. Rodriguez pitched six scoreless innings, struck out seven and issued a pair of walks in the first inning.

Hanley Ramirez hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Benintendi added a solo shot in the fifth.

Jaime Garcia allowed those homers among seven hits in 5 2/3 innings in his home debut for the Yankees. Adam Warren (3-2) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings before Chapman nearly blew the game.

Ramirez made it 2-0 by sending a 3-1 fastball into the visiting bullpen beyond the left-center field fence with two outs in the first inning.

Benintendi made it 3-0 by sending a first-pitch fastball into the first row of the second deck in right field with two outs in the fifth. Garcia gave up a double to Ramirez and walked Chris Young but ended the inning by retiring Xander Bogaerts.

NOTES: Boston LHP David Price (left elbow inflammation) made throws from 120 feet during a long toss session Friday afternoon. Manager John Farrell said it was the best Price looked so far since being placed on the DL on July 28. ... New York LHP CC Sabathia (right knee inflammation) said he expects to only miss one start after being placed on the disabled list Friday. Sabathia's next scheduled start was slated for Sunday opposite LHP Chris Sale but LHP Jordan Montgomery will get the nod after getting recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Friday. ... Boston 2B Dustin Pedroia was not in the lineup Friday because his left knee flared up after Wednesday's game. Farrell said there was some swelling and inflammation and Pedroia will get further examined.
