A's starter Sean Manaea had his own troubles, allowing six hits and six runs (five runs) in 3 1/3 innings, and the bullpen didn't provide much cover, Simon Castro and Liam Hendriks allowing two runs each as the Angels turned a 4-2 deficit into a 10-5 lead.
After Oakland fell behind by five runs, Josh Smith (1-0) pitched a scoreless seventh. Blake Treinen struck out two in the ninth to record his second save.
Homers by Escobar and Trout in the first gave the Angels a 2-0 lead. Oakland took a 4-2 edge on Canha's three-run homer in the fourth.
Los Angeles grabbed a 6-4 lead in the fourth on a two-run double by Juan Graterol and a two-run single by Cliff Pennington.
After Oakland scored a run in the fifth, a single by Kole Calhoun and a groundout by Graterol made it 8-5 in the fifth. Los Angeles added two more runs in the sixth on a single by C.J. Cron and a throwing error by Oakland shortstop Marcus Semien.
