MIAMI -- Rookie Nick Williams hit a two-out, two-run single in the top of the 12th inning to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 3-1 win over the Miami Marlins on Sunday afternoon at Marlins Park.
Williams, who had failed to get a runner home from third base with one out in the fifth and again in the 10th, found redemption against Marlins reliever Junichi Tazawa (3-4).
The Phillies (52-84), who have the worst record in the majors, took three of four games this weekend from the Marlins (67-69).
Reliever Adam Morgan (3-1) claimed the win with three scoreless innings.
Both starting pitchers were solid, but neither one factored into the decision.
Miami's Jose Urena allowed six hits, one walk and one run in seven innings, striking out three.
Philadelphia's Jake Thompson made his 14th career start and struck out a career-high seven in six innings, allowing three hits, no walks and one run.
Philadelphia's winning rally in the 12th started with a leadoff single by Daniel Nava. Pinch-runner Ricardo Pinto, a pitcher, came in and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Ty Kelly. Pinto made it to third on a passed ball from catcher A.J. Ellis and scored when Williams pulled a 1-1 pitch to right.
Philadelphia opened the scoring in the fifth. The Phillies produced four singles and made Urena throw 27 pitches but managed only one run. Freddy Galvis got the RBI on an opposite-field single, but Williams (lineout) and Tommy Joseph (groundout) both stranded the bases loaded.
Miami tied the score in the bottom of the fifth. Brian Anderson, playing his first weekend in the majors, pulled a leadoff double down the third-base line, advanced to third on an Ellis groundout and scored on a wild pitch in the dirt.
