MILWAUKEE -- Homer Bailey threw seven scoreless innings in his longest start since 2014 while Joey Votto and Tucker Barnhart homered as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 6-0 on Wednesday night at Miller Park.
Bailey (6-9) scattered four hits and three walks over his seven innings, striking out four. He hadn't cleared seven innings since Aug. 7. 2014, when he held Cleveland scoreless for seven innings in a 4-0 victory.
Shoulder and arm injuries limited him to only eight starts over the next two seasons, but he showed progress in 2017, taking the mound 17 times.
The Brewers, needing a victory to keep pace in their pursuit of Colorado for the final National League wild-card spot, were hurt by a short outing from rookie Brandon Woodruff (2-3), who gave up six runs on six hits and a walk in just 2 1/3 innings.
The loss dropped the Brewers 2 1/2 games behind the Rockies, who are idle Thursday while Milwaukee wraps up its series with the Reds.
Votto tagged Woodruff for a two-out solo homer in the opening inning -- his 36th of the year -- while Barnhart's seventh of the season kicked off what would be a five-run second inning for the Reds, who collected four singles in the inning.
Milwaukee managed only one hit through its first three innings against Bailey but finally put things together in the fourth, with singles by Travis Shaw and Stephen Vogt.
But Billy Hamilton preserved the shutout, making a perfect throw from center to get Shaw as he tried to score on a base hit by Orlando Arcia, getting Bailey out of the inning.
