Zach Plesac pitched eight innings of two-hit ball as the Cleveland Indians defeated the host Seattle Mariners 4-2 Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series.
The right-hander, who had been on the losing end of two no-hitters this season, held the Mariners hitless through the first seven innings.
Seattle's J.P. Crawford led off the eighth by lining a single over leaping shortstop Amed Rosario. An out later, Dylan Moore hit a two-run homer into the first row of the second deck in left field at T-Mobile Park.
Plesac (3-3) walked three and struck out two. Closer Emmanuel Clase got two outs in the ninth but then walked the next three batters to load the bases. Fellow right-hander Bryan Shaw came on to strike out Luis Torrens to earn his first save of the season.
Franmil Reyes and Jose Ramirez hit home runs for the Indians, who spoiled the major league debut of Seattle right-hander Logan Gilbert (0-1).
With one out in the second inning, Reyes drove an 0-1 pitch over the fence in straightaway center field. Josh Naylor then lined a single into center field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jake Bauers lined a two-out single to left to give the Indians a 2-0 lead.
Cleveland doubled its lead in the third. With one out, Rosario lined a single to center and stole second. Ramirez homered to right on a 3-1 pitch to make it 4-0.
Gilbert, the No. 28 overall prospect in baseball via MLB Pipeline, allowed four runs on five hits in four innings, with no walks and five strikeouts.
Gilbert wasn't the only highly touted Mariners prospect to make his debut, as Jarred Kelenic started in left field and batted leadoff. Kelenic, the No. 4 overall prospect, went 0-for-4.
It was the fourth consecutive victory for the Indians and their ninth in the past 10 games. Their only loss in that span was when they were no-hit by Cincinnati's Wade Miley in a 3-0 decision on May 7.
Seattle lost its fifth in a row but avoided being no-hit for the second consecutive home game. The Mariners were held hitless by Baltimore's John Means on May 5 in the last game of the previous homestand.
