Willy Adames hit a tying two-run home run in the ninth and Keston Hiura delivered a sacrifice fly in the 11th as the Milwaukee Brewers overcame a late four-run deficit to beat the visiting Colorado Rockies 5-4 on Friday.
Trailing 4-0 in the seventh inning, Milwaukee got back in the game via the long ball. Hiura belted a solo homer in the seventh and Kolten Wong (two hits) followed with a deep blast to left-center field in the eighth to make it a 4-2 contest.
Facing Colorado closer Daniel Bard in the ninth, Omar Narvaez walked to open the frame and Adames, who had three hits, launched his 10th home run of the season to tie the game at 4-4. It was Bard's fifth blown save in 2021.
After neither team advanced its runner from second based in the 10th, and the Rockies went in order in the 11th, the Brewers loaded the bags in the bottom of the frame. Hiura, in his second game since being recalled from Triple-A Nashville, came through with a lineout to center that scored Manny Pina from third, as the Brewers won their third in a row and fifth in six games.
The teams combined for 31 strikeouts on the day.
The loss for Colorado, which fell to 6-29 on the road, overshadowed a strong return to action for starter Jon Gray. Out since June 4 with a right flexor strain, Gray exited after throwing 83 pitches over five scoreless innings and allowing five hits while fanning 10 batters - half of the batters he faced -- without yielding a walk.
According to the Rockies, Gray has matched Pedro Astacio's club record with 15 double-digit strikeout games.
Meanwhile, Milwaukee's Corbin Burnes did not allow a hit through his first 5 1/3 innings. Then Raimel Tapia reached on an infield hit, stole second and scored the game's first run on Yonathan Daza's single. Burnes completed six innings, allowing that run, three hits and two walks while striking out seven.
Colorado made it 2-0 in the seventh on Elias Diaz's RBI single. He was along for the ride on Joshua Fuentes' seventh homer of the season, over the left-field wall, to give the Rockies a 4-0 lead.
After striking out five over two innings of relief in his major league debut on Monday at Arizona, Milwaukee's Jake Cousins fanned four over two on Friday.
