Sean Manaea struck out a career-high 13 batters as the Oakland Athletics defeated the host Seattle Mariners 4-1 Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series.
Manaea (7-6) went seven innings and allowed one run on three hits and three walks. The left-hander won for the first time in his past five decisions.
Right-hander Lou Trivino pitched the ninth inning and recorded his 16th save of the season.
Seattle's Tom Murphy hit a home run leading off the seventh inning. The only other hits the Mariners managed off Manaea were two-out singles by Ty France in the first and Kyle Seager in the sixth.
Mariners right-hander Chris Flexen (9-4) gave up two runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out one.
The A's put together a two-out rally in the fifth inning to break a scoreless tie.
Elvis Andrus hit a broken-bat single to shallow right field and then stole second base. He advanced to third on an infield single by Mark Canha when second baseman Dylan Moore couldn't quite handle a grounder after ranging behind the bag.
Ramon Laureano then hit a one-hopper back toward the mound, with the ball hitting Flexen in the lower right leg and caroming toward the third base line. Flexen retrieved the ball but had no play as Andrus scored. Flexen got Matt Olson to fly out to left field for the third out.
Oakland scored again in the sixth. With one out, Mitch Moreland hit a ground-rule double to right field. Sean Murphy then lined a double into the left field corner to make it 2-0 and end Flexen's night.
The A's added two runs off right-hander Rafael Montero in the eighth. Matt Chapman and Seth Brown opened the frame with singles, and Andrus moved the runners along with a sacrifice bunt. A walk to Canha loaded the bases, and Laureano lined a run-scoring single to left. Olson hit a sacrifice fly to right to make it 4-1.
Canha, Laureano and Sean Murphy each had two of Oakland's 11 hits. Seattle was limited to four hits.
