Two runs scored on Billy Hamilton's seventh-inning bunt single Friday night, helping the Cincinnati Reds build upon a narrow lead en route to a 3-0 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the opener of a three-game series in Cincinnati.
Reds right-hander Anthony DeSclafani (6-3) pitched seven shutout innings, helping Cincinnati even its season series with Arizona at 2-2.
The Reds opened the scoring against Diamondbacks right-hander Clay Buchholz (5-2) in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Eugenio Suarez, then took command in the seventh.
Tucker Barnhart smacked a one-out double in the seventh and took third on a single by DeSclafani.
Hamilton then laid down a perfect squeeze bunt, scoring Barnhart, and when Buchholz threw the ball away in his haste to get an out, DeSclafani came all the way around from first to score a second run.
Buchholz was pulled after seven innings, having allowed three runs (two earned) and eight hits. He walked two and struck out four.
DeSclafani pitched into the eighth, but was taken out after Steven Souza Jr. led off the inning with a single with the Diamondbacks trailing 3-0.
Nick Ahmed's one-out single put runners on first and third, but Jared Hughes got Alex Avila, representing the potential tying run, to ground into an inning-ending double play.
DeSclafani limited the Diamondbacks to just three hits in his seven-plus innings. He struck out nine and did not walk a batter.
Closer Raisel Iglesias pitched around a Paul Goldschmidt double in the ninth to record his 22nd save and complete the Reds' fourth shutout of the season.
Jose Peraza had two hits for the Reds, who had lost seven of their previous nine games.
Peraza scored Cincinnati's first run after leading off the sixth inning with a single. He went to third on Joey Votto's single, setting up Suarez's sacrifice fly.
Goldschmidt collected a single and a double for the Diamondbacks, who had a three-game road winning streak snapped.
The Reds out-hit the Diamondbacks 9-5.
