Marcus Semien and Corey Seager delivered run-scoring singles in the seventh inning and Adolis Garcia added a three-run double in the eighth as the Texas Rangers rallied for a 6-2 victory over the visiting Houston Astros on Monday.
The Rangers notched their fourth win in five games by striking against the Houston bullpen.
In the seventh, with the Astros up 2-1, pinch hitter Willie Calhoun stroked a leadoff double off Houston reliever Phil Maton (0-1) in the seventh and advanced to third base when Kole Calhoun followed with a fly ball to right field.
Semien then delivered a single past the drawn-in infield to left, scoring Calhoun and pulling Texas even. Semien went to second when Garcia singled and took third on a wild pitch by reliever Ryne Stanek. Seager then laced a single to right drive to home Semien.
Semien and Seager were the faces of the Rangers' offseason free agent spending splurge.
In the eighth, two hits and a walk set up Garcia's two-out, three-run double off Ronel Blanco.
The Rangers were unable to capitalize against Astros left-hander Framber Valdez despite fashioning multiple opportunities. After tagging Valdez for an unearned run in the second inning that knotted the game at 1-1, Texas squandered a Seager walk and a Nick Solak hit by pitch in the fourth before stranding a pair of runners in both the fifth and the sixth.
Valdez capped his outing having allowed one unearned run on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts in six innings.
Yordan Alvarez gave Houston a 1-0 lead leading off the second against Rangers right-hander Dane Dunning with his fourth home run of the year. Dunning went 5 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on five hits and a walk with five strikeouts.
Kyle Tucker greeted Texas reliever John King with a run-scoring single to left that scored Yuli Gurriel for a 2-1 lead in the sixth. Matt Moore (1-0) replaced King in the seventh inning and faced four batters, walking one.
