Josh Bell collected three of the visiting Miami Marlins' 16 hits and Jesus Sanchez homered in a 9-1 rout of the San Diego Padres on Wednesday that prevented a three-game sweep.
Miami starter Braxton Garrett (2-0) scattered six hits and a run over five innings with no walks and two strikeouts. Four relievers kept San Diego at bay, permitting only two hits and a walk in four scoreless innings, denying the Padres their first three-game home sweep of the season.
Yu Darvish (4-3) absorbed his second straight loss, lasting just three innings and allowing six hits. He was charged with three runs (two earned), walked one and struck out two.
Miami attacked steadily, scoring in six innings. Its big outburst came in the fifth, when it touched relievers Stephen Kolek and Enyel De Los Santos for three runs to build a 6-1 lead.
Jake Burger drove in Bell, who led off with a double, with an RBI single that chased Kolek. De Los Santos came on an immediately gave up three straight singles, the last two knocking in runs courtesy of Otto Lopez and Vidal Brujan.
Sanchez made it 7-1 in the sixth when he launched his third home run of 2024, a long solo homer to right that appeared to sail down an exit ramp.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. tacked on a two-out RBI triple in the seventh that scored Lopez, who drew a leadoff walk. Lopez capped the scoring in the ninth when he singled and eventually scored on a Nick Fortes groundout.
Fortes' two-out RBI double and Chisholm's run-scoring single put the Marlins on the board in the second and they made it 3-0 in the third via Manny Machado's throwing error.
The Padres' Ha-Seong Kim belted a homer in the bottom of the third, his seventh of the season.
Donovan Solano was San Diego's only hitter with two hits.
