Seattle Mariners vs San Diego Padres Match Player Stats On Apr 24, 2019

Rookie right hander Chris Paddack allowed one hit over seven shutout innings and Ian Kinsler homered on the first pitch he saw from Felix Hernandez on Wednesday afternoon as the San Diego Padres defeated the visiting Seattle Mariners 1-0.

Paddack and relievers Trey Wingenter and Kirby Yates combined on a two-hit shutout and retired 24 of the last 25 Mariners they faced -- with the only baserunner during the stretch erased on a game-ending double play turned by rookie shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr.

Paddack (1-1) picked up his first major league win in a pitching duel with Mariners' veteran Hernandez. The 6-foot-5, 23-year-old Paddack retired the last 19 Mariners he faced after working out of a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the first.

Wingenter retired the Mariners in order in the eighth. And Kirby Yates picked up his 12th save after giving up a one-out single to Daniel Vogelbach in the ninth.

In addition to the hit, Paddack issued a walk and hit a batter while throwing 83 pitches (59 strikes) and lowering his ERA to 1.67 after five starts.

Hernandez (1-2) allowed the one run on three hits and a walk with eight strikeouts in seven innings.

Mitch Haniger opened the game by drawing a five-pitch walk from Paddack. After Vogelbach popped out to catcher Francisco Mejia in foul territory, Domingo Santana grounded a single to left past third baseman Manny Machado for the Mariners' only hit until the ninth.

Omar Narvaez tapped back to Paddack for the inning's second out with Santana and Haniger advancing to second and third, respectively. Paddack then hit Tim Beckham to load the bases.

But Paddack got Dee Gordon on a bad swing for strike three to end the first and start his run of 19 straight Mariners retired.

Meanwhile, Kinsler connected on the first pitch he saw from Hernandez with two out in the second -- the 349-foot drive bouncing off the first-deck facade of the Western Metal Supply Co. building in left.

The win completed a two-game Padres' sweep over a Mariners team that came to Petco Park with an 11-2 road record and a streak of scoring at least five runs in 13 straight away games.
