Pinch-hitter Tony Kemp hit a walk-off home run leading off the 10th inning and the Houston Astros claimed a 4-3 victory over the visiting Cleveland Indians on Saturday.
Kemp, batting for catcher Max Stassi, drilled a 2-1 slider from Indians right-hander Adam Cimber (2-2) 360 feet over the wall in right field. For Kemp, it was his second homer this season and the blast made a winner out of Astros closer Roberto Osuna (2-0), who worked two scoreless innings of relief. The Astros will attempt to salvage a series split on Sunday.
Down 3-1, Cleveland rallied against arguably the Astros' two most effective relievers this season. Right-hander Will Harris entered the game with a streak of 22 consecutive scoreless appearances, the second longest in the majors. He last allowed a run on Aug. 18, 2018, but found trouble with one out in the seventh inning when Jake Bauers and Tyler Naquin beat the shift and reached on hits that likely would have been routine outs against traditional defensive alignments.
Right-hander Ryan Pressly, who entered Saturday with a streak of 30 consecutive scoreless appearances, replaced Harris, immediately unleashed a wild pitch that enabled Bauers and Naquin to advance a base, then pinch-hitter Francisco Lindor produced a sacrifice fly before shortstop Mike Freeman followed with an RBI single to right field to tie the score.
Pressly still managed to extend his scoreless innings streak to 29 1/3 innings, a club record.
In the sixth, the Astros surged ahead, breaking a three-inning stretch of dominance from Indians starter Shane Bieber. After walking a batter and surrendering two hits in the second, including a run-scoring double to Aledmys Diaz that spotted the Astros a 1-0 lead, Bieber retired 11 of 12 batters. But in the sixth, he issued a leadoff walk to Alex Bregman before Carlos Correa followed two batters later with a line-drive homer out to left field for a 3-1 lead.
It was Correa's sixth homer this season. Bieber allowed three runs on three hits and four walks with a season-high-tying nine strikeouts over six innings. Correa provided Astros starter Brad Peacock a temporary advantage after Peacock allowed one run on four hits and one walk with seven strikeouts over six innings.
Peacock surrendered his lone run in the fourth when Jose Ramirez scored on a Carlos Santana double-play grounder.
