Austin Meadows homered with one out in the top of the 11th inning as the Tampa Bay Rays edged the New York Yankees 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.
Meadows snapped a 1-1 deadlock when he lined a 2-2 slider off Luis Cessa (0-1) into the right-field seats. It was Meadows' ninth homer of the season.
Hunter Wood (1-0) tossed a scoreless 10th after being activated from the injured list before the game. Jose Alvarado worked around a leadoff single in the 11th and converted his fifth save in six chances after allowing three runs in the ninth inning Friday.
The Rays got the chance to win it after reliever Emilio Pagan brought the game into extra innings by striking out five of the six hitters he faced. He highlighted his outing by winning a 12-pitch encounter with Gio Urshela. Urshela fouled off seven straight fastballs before flying out to the warning track in right-center field.
The Rays halted New York's four-game winning streak and rebounded after allowing three runs in the ninth on Friday. Tampa Bay also moved to 3-8 in one-run games this year.
Brandon Lowe tied the game by homering on the second pitch of the seventh inning off Yankees reliever Tommy Kahnle.
For the second time in six days, New York's Masahiro Tanaka and Tampa Bay's Blake Snell opposed each other.
Tanaka pitched six scoreless innings of three-hit ball before exiting with a right shin contusion. He ended his outing by having his right leg deflect a 111.3 mph grounder by Yandy Diaz to first baseman Luke Voit.
Snell allowed one run on six hits in six innings. He struck out nine, walked one and threw 58 of 93 pitches for strikes.
It was the first time in his 13 career starts against the Yankees that Snell completed six innings. He also was pitching to his fourth catcher in his past five outings as Erik Kratz made his debut for Tampa Bay after being acquired from San Francisco on Thursday.
The Yankees loaded the bases in the third on a walk and two singles but only scored once when Brett Gardner scored on a wild pitch. The inning ended when Gary Sanchez struck out on a high fastball.
New York missed another chance to add a run in the sixth when Aaron Hicks reached on a two-base throwing error by Snell. Hicks attempted to score on a single by Gleyber Torres but Meadows made a strong throw from left field to the plate to get the final out.
Lowe then tied the game by hammering Kahnle's 1-0, 98 mph fastball into the right field seats.
