Matt Adams and Juan Soto homered, and rookie Austin Voth threw six strong innings as the visiting Washington Nationals defeated the Baltimore Orioles 8-1 in the opener of a two-game series Tuesday night.
After the series concludes Wednesday, Baltimore and Washington will meet again for a two-game series in the nation's capital in late August.
Adams, Soto and Anthony Rendon all finished with two hits and two RBIs.
Washington recalled Voth from Double-A Harrisburg earlier Tuesday. Voth (1-0), pitching in his eighth major league game, earned his second major league victory after allowing one run on four hits and a walk with four strikeouts.
Starter Asher Wojciechowski (0-3) gave the Orioles 5 1/3 innings, yielding three runs on six hits. He struck out seven without a walk and kept Baltimore close, but the offense could not help enough.
Washington took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Adams hit a one-out homer to right off Wojciechowski.
Baltimore tied it in the bottom of the inning when Hanser Alberto belted a solo homer.
The Nationals took the lead for good in the third when Rendon doubled home Trea Turner, who had doubled earlier in the inning. They added two runs in the sixth, the first coming on a Soto homer. The second scored when pitcher Shawn Armstrong balked with Brian Dozier on third, giving Washington a 4-1 lead.
Dozier nearly manufactured that last run by himself. He reached on a two-out infield single, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch before scoring on the balk.
Rendon struck again in the seventh with his second RBI double of the night, this one off Miguel Castro. Victor Robles added an RBI single in the eighth against Jimmy Yacabonis to stretch the lead to 6-1.
Soto and Adams added RBI singles in the ninth.
Washington relievers Tanner Rainey (one inning) and Javy Guerra (two innings) held the Orioles hitless after Voth departed.
