Tucker Barnhart had a pair of RBI singles to highlight his three-hit performance as the host Cincinnati Reds recorded a 3-2 win over the Colorado Rockies on Sunday.
Barnhart joined Jose Iglesias by notching an RBI single in the second inning before adding another in the sixth for the Reds, who posted their first series win versus Colorado since May 30-June 2, 2016.
Former Red Yonder Alonso belted a two-run homer and joined Ryan McMahon and David Dahl with two hits for the reeling Rockies, who have lost 11 of their last 14 games.
Rookie Josh VanMeter walked against Jake McGee (0-2) to lead off the sixth inning before advancing to second after Iglesias was hit by a pitch. Barnhart slapped a single to center field to plate VanMeter and give Cincinnati a 3-2 lead.
Lucas Sims (2-1) picked up the win after allowing one hit in 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief of starter Alex Wood, who fared well in his season debut with the Reds.
The 28-year-old Wood, who had been sidelined by a back injury, allowed seven hits through 4 2/3 scoreless innings before Alonso deposited his 1-0 changeup over the wall in right-center field to forge a tie at 2. Alonso's homer was his eighth of the season and first since May 30 when he played with the Chicago White Sox.
Amir Garrett struck out two batters in the seventh inning and Michael Lorenzen bridged the gap to Raisel Iglesias, who stranded a pair of runners in the ninth for his 19th save.
Jose Iglesias' infield single off starter Peter Lambert allowed VanMeter to score from third base to open the scoring in the second inning. Barnhart followed with an RBI single to left-center field to plate Scooter Gennett and stake the Reds to a 2-0 lead.
Cincinnati rookie Nick Senzel struck out to end the fourth inning before getting ejected moments later after arguing with home plate umpire Bill Miller. The ejection was the first of Senzel's career.
