A quartet of rookies led San Diego to a 7-1 victory over the visiting Colorado Rockies on Friday night, giving the Padres back-to-back victories for the first time since the All-Star break.
Right-hander Cal Quantrill (5-3) gave up five hits and no walks with five strikeouts over a career-long, seven-inning outing to earn the win.
Quantrill, who equaled his career high of 102 pitches, allowed only two Rockies to reach second base. Over his past eight outings (five starts), Quantrill is 4-1 with a 1.49 ERA.
Among the San Diego rookie batters, Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a two-run double in the third inning to extend his hitting streak to a career-long 13 games. Luis Urias was 2-for-4 with three runs and an RBI. And Josh Naylor capped a four-run eighth inning with a three-run homer, his fifth long ball of the season and second as a pinch hitter.
Quantrill outpitched Rockies left-hander Kyle Freeland in a pairing of former eighth overall draft picks. Freeland (3-10) was the eighth overall pick in the 2014 draft by the Rockies. The Padres selected Quantrill with the eighth overall pick two years later.
Freeland gave up three runs on eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts in six innings.
The Padres scored their first two runs in the third. Manuel Margot drew a walk from Freeland to open the inning and moved to second on an Urias single. After Quantrill struck out in an unsuccessful bunt attempt, Tatis lined a double through the left-center-field gap.
San Diego added a third run in the fifth. Urias opened the inning with an opposite-field single to right and this time was bunted to second by Quantrill. After Tatis drew a walk, Wil Myers hit an opposite-field single through the right side to drive home Urias.
The Rockies broke up the Padres' shutout bid in the ninth, scoring on a groundout by Ian Desmond.
An Urias grounder drove in an eighth-inning run ahead of Naylor's blast to right.
With the two consecutive wins, the Padres are 9-16 since the All-Star break. The Rockies are 8-19 since the second half started.
