Ryan O'Hearn capped his two-homer performance by going deep to lead off the 10th inning as the visiting Kansas City Royals averted a series sweep with a 9-8 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Sunday afternoon.
After Franmil Reyes completed his sixth two-homer performance of the season with a game-tying three-run shot in the ninth inning, O'Hearn regained the advantage by depositing a 2-2 fastball from Nick Goody (3-1) over the wall in right field.
The second homer by O'Hearn allowed Ian Kennedy (1-2) to pick up the win despite yielding four runs on three hits in one inning. Jorge Lopez retired the side in the 10th to secure his first save of his career.
Jorge Soler launched a two-run homer to ignite a five-run eighth inning and Nicky Lopez drove in three runs for the Royals, who had mustered just five runs over the course of their previous four games, all defeats.
Reyes led off the eighth inning with a homer and Francisco Lindor also went deep in the ninth against Kennedy to trim Kansas City's lead to 8-5. Carlos Santana worked a two-out walk and Yasiel Puig singled before Reyes deposited a 2-2 fastball over the wall in center field to tie the game in the ninth.
Kevin Plawecki crushed a two-run homer in the third inning, his third, and added an RBI single in the seventh for the Indians, who have lost eight of their last 12 games.
Shane Bieber retired the last 13 batters he faced before giving way to Nick Wittgren to start the eighth. Wittgren saw Whit Merrifield reach on an error before Soler belted his team-leading 36th homer to give Kansas City a 5-3 lead.
After a one-out walk to Alex Gordon, Phil Maton relieved Wittgren and promptly walked two batters of his own and uncorked a run-scoring wild pitch before walking the bases loaded again and exiting the game. Lopez greeted Hunter Wood with a double to right field to cap the five-run uprising.
Cleveland's Yu Chang collected a triple and single for his first two major league hits after being recalled from Triple-A Columbus. Chang was summoned to replace two-time All-Star third baseman Jose Ramirez, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with a broken hamate bone in his right hand.
The Royals scratched for a pair of runs in the second inning before O'Hearn tacked on another in the third by depositing a 1-1 curveball from Bieber over the wall in right field.
Cleveland answered in the bottom of the frame as Chang walked and Plawecki sent a 2-2 fastball from Eric Skoglund over the wall in left field. Plawecki forged a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning when his single to center field scored Chang.
