Chicago @ Toronto preview
Rogers Centre
Last Meeting ( Apr 16, 2013 ) Chi. White Sox 4, Toronto 3
The Chicago White Sox and host Toronto Blue Jays have plenty in common early in the season as they resume their four-game series on Wednesday. Both teams come into the night with identical 6-8 records, and each club has registered a 4-3 victory in the series. They'll both turn to left-handers Wednesday, as Chicago's Jose Quintana seeks his first win of the season against Toronto counterpart J.A. Happ.
The White Sox boast one of the most anemic offenses in the majors, but saw one of their slumping sluggers break out in Tuesday's victory. Paul Konerko, who came into the game hitting .222, went 2-for-3 with a home run and three runs scored as Chicago won for just the second time in its last eight games. Toronto welcomed third baseman Brett Lawrie (strained oblique) to the lineup, but he went hitless in three at-bats in his season debut.
PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox LH Jose Quintana (0-0, 4.09 ERA) vs. Blue Jays LH J.A. Happ (2-0, 3.48)
Quintana posted one of the best starts in the majors last time out, but ended up with a no-decision to show for it. The 24-year-old limited Cleveland to one hit over seven sensational innings, only to see the Indians score a run in the ninth to escape with a 1-0 victory. Quintana is 1-1 with a 2.84 ERA in two career encounters with Toronto, but has allowed Blue Jay hitters to bat .347 in 12 2/3 innings.
Happ is the temporary No. 5 starter as fellow lefty Ricky Romero works out the kinks at extended spring training. Happ has fared well in Romero's absence, throwing 5 1/3 innings of shutout ball in his season opener against Boston and surviving a shaky five-inning stint in a victory over Kansas City. Happ hasn't faced the White Sox, but he's familiar with Adam Dunn, having limited the Chicago slugger to a single in nine career at-bats.
WALK-OFFS
1. Toronto RF Jose Bautista has missed the last two games with an ailing back and an ear infection. His status for Wednesday's game remains up in the air.
2. Dunn is 1-for-26 with eight strikeouts on Chicago's 10-game road trip, dropping his average to .120.
3. Eight of the last 10 encounters have been decided by two runs or fewer.
PREDICTION: Blue Jays 5, White Sox 3
