Arizona @ New York preview
Yankee Stadium
Last Meeting ( Apr 17, 2013 ) Arizona 3, NY Yankees 4
The New York Yankees have come from behind twice to defeat the Arizona Diamondbacks and will go for the three-game sweep when they host the finale Thursday. The Yankees have gotten big home runs in each of the first two games, with Robinson Cano erasing a two-run deficit with a three-run blast in the first game and Travis Hafner coming off the bench for a pinch-hit solo shot to give them the lead in the eighth inning Wednesday.
Arizona starter Wade Miley was cruising along through six innings with a 3-0 lead when he fell apart in the seventh Wednesday and the bullpen could not hang on. The Diamondbacks’ bats have done well in the early innings but have not been able to break through late after the Yankees have responded. Brett Gardner has played a big part in New York’s three-game winning streak and drove in two runs to tie it in the seventh Wednesday. Gardner was hitting .167 through April 8 but had another multi-hit game Wednesday to bump that mark up to .259.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks LH Patrick Corbin (2-0, 1.50 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Phil Hughes (0-2, 10.29)
Corbin grew up a Yankees fan in upstate New York and should have plenty of support in the stands during his first career appearance at Yankee Stadium. The 23-year-old has gotten off to a strong start with a pair of wins and is coming off a dominating performance against the Los Angeles Dodgers in which he scattered three hits in six scoreless innings. Corbin has never faced an American League team except Houston, when it was still in the National League.
Hughes has been the outlier in an otherwise strong rotation. The right-hander has been pushed up twice to cover for injuries to other pitchers and has been knocked around for nine runs (eight earned) and 17 hits in seven total innings. He surrendered three home runs in as many innings in a loss to Baltimore on Saturday. Hughes has never faced Arizona and is 4-2 with a 4.46 ERA in 11 career interleague games (six starts).
WALK-OFFS
1. Diamondbacks 1B Paul Goldschmidt homered Wednesday and has reached base safely in all 14 games.
2. Yankees RHP Mariano Rivera has gotten the save in each of the first two games in the series.
3. New York 1B Mark Teixeira (wrist) has been cleared to swing a bat and hopes to return next month.
