San Diego @ Los Angeles preview

Dodger Stadium

Last Meeting ( Apr 15, 2013 ) San Diego 6, LA Dodgers 3

The San Diego Padres are hoping to see Chase Headley’s name on the lineup card before a three-game series with the host Los Angeles Dodgers concludes. It could be soon as Tuesday’s game as Headley is close to concluding a rehab assignment because of a thumb injury. Headley was San Diego’s best position player last season when he hit 31 homers and drove in 115 runs. Los Angeles has lost two straight games after dropping Monday’s opener.

Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp had two hits Monday for only his second multi-hit outing of the campaign. Kemp raised his average to .196, but remains homerless in 51 at-bats. He has 17 career homers against San Diego. First baseman Adrian Gonzalez had a run-scoring double and has a .429 average in 13 games against the Padres, his former club. The opener was played without any altercations or visible tension looming. San Diego outfielder Carlos Quentin is serving an eight-game suspension because of his actions in Thursday’s brawl that left Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke with a broken left collarbone.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Jason Marquis (0-1, 3.27 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Chris Capuano (0-0, 0.00)

Marquis wasn’t involved in the decision when he gave up two runs and seven hits over five innings while opposing Greinke last week. He lost his first outing of the season six days earlier when he allowed five runs (two earned) and six hits in six innings. Marquis is 6-4 with a 2.63 ERA in 16 career appearances (15 starts) against the Dodgers. Kemp (.150 in 20 at-bats) and right fielder Andre Ethier (.115 in 26 at-bats) have struggled against Marquis.

Capuano moved into the rotation to take the spot of Greinke, who is expected to be sidelined for close to two months. Capuano was 12-12 with a 3.72 ERA in 33 starts for the Dodgers last season. He is 5-4 with a 3.34 ERA in 14 career appearances (11 starts) against the Padres. Two of his relief appearances came in San Diego last week when he allowed no runs and two hits in 2 2/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

2. Padres CF Cameron Maybin is batting .091 after reaching base twice and scoring two runs Monday.

3. Five Los Angeles relievers combined to walk six batters in three innings in the opener.

About Units and “ROI”

Units are a standardized measurement used to determine the size of each of your bets relative to your bankroll. For example, if you have a bankroll of $200 and you bet 5% of your bankroll each time, each of your units is worth $10. A bettor with a $2000 bankroll who bets 5% per bet has units of $100. We use the number of units to standardize the amount the trend is up or down across different bet amounts.

ROI is the best indicator of success and measures how much you bet vs. how much you profited. Any positive ROI is good in sports betting with great long-term bettors sitting in the 5-7% range.
