Arizona @ San Francisco preview

AT&T Park

Last Meeting ( Apr 22, 2013 ) Arizona 4, San Francisco 5

Two of the top catchers in the National League will be featured Tuesday when the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Francisco Giants continue their three-game series at AT&T Park. While the Giants’ Buster Posey appears to have put his slow start behind him, Arizona’s Miguel Montero is still looking to get untracked. Posey, the reigning National League MVP, has homered in each of his last two games and raised his average to .250 with two hits in the Giants’ 5-4 victory in Monday’s series opener.

Montero is 3-for-23 through the first seven games of Arizona’s road trip, and he struck out with the bases loaded in the first inning Monday. “I don't feel like I’m in a slump; I don't feel like I'm struggling,” Montero told reporters before Monday's contest. “I’m just not getting any hard hits. It will come.” The Diamondbacks are also hoping second baseman Cliff Pennington is close to breaking out of a lengthy slump after he snapped an 0-for-19 skid with a single in the ninth Monday.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks LH Patrick Corbin (2-0, 1.42 ERA) vs. Giants RH Matt Cain (0-2, 7.15)

Corbin has been sharp in his first three starts, including Thursday when he held the Yankees to one run while striking out seven over seven innings. Hunter Pence is 3-for-8 with one home run against Corbin, who is 2-1 with 5.09 ERA in four career starts against the Giants. The 23-year-old earned the fifth spot in the Diamondbacks’ starting rotation after a strong spring training, and he’s justified the call by allowing three runs in his first 19 innings.

The Giants are winless in Cain’s first four starts, and the right-hander is coming off a dismal outing Thursday when he gave up seven runs over six innings against Milwaukee. “You look at the video, and he’s at times been a little bit off with his delivery,” manager Bruce Bochy told reporters. Montero is 10-for-43 with two homers against Cain, who is 13-6 with a 3.34 ERA in 27 career starts against Arizona, including 3-0 with a 2.63 ERA in four starts last season.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Giants have won 17 of their last 21 home games dating to last season.

2. Arizona RHP Brad Ziegler’s 12 relief appearances lead the majors. He’s allowed two earned runs over 10 2/3 innings.

3. San Francisco is 9-1 against teams from the National League West.

PREDICTION: Giants 4, Diamondbacks 1

About Units and “ROI”

Units are a standardized measurement used to determine the size of each of your bets relative to your bankroll. For example, if you have a bankroll of $200 and you bet 5% of your bankroll each time, each of your units is worth $10. A bettor with a $2000 bankroll who bets 5% per bet has units of $100. We use the number of units to standardize the amount the trend is up or down across different bet amounts.

ROI is the best indicator of success and measures how much you bet vs. how much you profited. Any positive ROI is good in sports betting with great long-term bettors sitting in the 5-7% range.
