Last Meeting ( May 3, 2013 ) LA Dodgers 1, San Francisco 2

The news just keeps getting worse for the Los Angeles Dodgers, who could be without shortstop Hanley Ramirez for an extended period after he suffered a left hamstring injury Friday. The Dodgers will almost surely be without Ramirez on Saturday when they continue their three-game series against the host San Francisco Giants, who won Friday’s series opener 2-1 on Buster Posey’s walk-off homer. Ramirez has appeared in four games this season after missing the first 24 with a thumb injury.

While the Dodgers have already used the disabled list 10 times this season, the Giants have been relatively healthy. They have also won four straight with Posey leading the way. After a slow start, the reigning National League MVP is batting .357 (15-for-42) with four home runs and 12 RBIs over the last 13 games. The Giants added an extra outfielder Friday, calling up Francisco Peguero from Triple-A Fresno. Peguero could battle for playing time with Gregor Blanco and Andres Torres in left field.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers RH Matt Magill (0-0, 2.70 ERA) vs. Giants RH Ryan Vogelsong (1-2, 6.23)

Magill is starting in place of veteran lefty Ted Lilly, who was scratched with tightness in his back. Magill made an impressive major-league debut last Saturday against the Brewers, allowing two runs while striking out seven in 6 2/3 innings. The 23-year-old Magill had made only four starts above the Double-A level prior to the Milwaukee game. “He's a guy that just seems to be under control," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly told reporters. "He just keeps working and getting better.”

Vogelsong’s shaky start this season continued Sunday against the Padres, when he allowed three home runs and was pulled after giving up six runs (five earned) in five innings. The 35-year-old right-hander is 4-3 with a 3.19 ERA in 17 career appearances (eight starts) against the Dodgers. Matt Kemp is 5-for-17 with a home run against Vogelsong, who has allowed four runs or more in four of his first five outings. He went 2-1 with a 0.71 ERA in four starts against the Dodgers last season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Dodgers 1B Adrian Gonzalez missed Friday’s game with a stiff neck and is listed as day-to-day.

2. The Giants’ 10 come-from-behind wins lead the majors.

3. Los Angeles 2B Mark Ellis (quad) has missed the last six games and could land on the disabled list this weekend.

PREDICTION: Giants 7, Dodgers 5

About Units and “ROI”

Units are a standardized measurement used to determine the size of each of your bets relative to your bankroll. For example, if you have a bankroll of $200 and you bet 5% of your bankroll each time, each of your units is worth $10. A bettor with a $2000 bankroll who bets 5% per bet has units of $100. We use the number of units to standardize the amount the trend is up or down across different bet amounts.

ROI is the best indicator of success and measures how much you bet vs. how much you profited. Any positive ROI is good in sports betting with great long-term bettors sitting in the 5-7% range.
