Last Meeting ( Oct 6, 2012 ) Cincinnati 5, San Francisco 2

The National League Division Series between the Cincinnati Reds and San Francisco Giants changed after just one batter in Game 1, when Reds starter Johnny Cueto exited with back spasms. The injury forced the Reds to use six pitchers in the 5-2 victory - including Mat Latos, who was originally scheduled to start Game 3. Cincinnati is hopeful that Cueto will be able to return as soon as Game 3, with Latos available to pitch Game 4 after throwing just 57 pitches in the series opener. Homer Bailey is also available after he wasn’t used in the opener. The Giants are looking to even the series behind starter Madison Bumgarner, who went 10-3 with a 2.38 ERA in 15 starts this season at AT&T Park.

After snapping a seven-game postseason losing streak on Saturday, the Reds will look to take a two-game lead before heading home for the rest of the series. Second baseman Brandon Phillips hit a two-run homer with three RBI in the opener, and he’s 7-for-17 in his career in the postseason. Closer Aroldis Chapman struggled a bit before finishing the game, throwing 28 pitches in a non-save situation. The Giants haven’t announced their Game 3 starter, with Tim Lincecum, Ryan Vogelsong and Barry Zito all still in the mix. Cain figures to return for Game 4, but he’s suffered three of his six losses this season to the Reds. After pitching 21 1/3 scoreless innings in the 2010 postseason, Cain allowed three earned runs over five frames on Saturday.

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, TBS

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Bronson Arroyo (12-10, 3.74 ERA) vs. Giants LH Madison Bumgarner (16-11, 3.37)

Arroyo has a 6.04 ERA in 11 career postseason appearances (four starts), and he’s seeking his first win against the Giants since 2008. The 35-year-old Arroyo is 3-5 with a 3.13 ERA in 12 career games (11 starts) against San Francisco, including 0-4 with a 4.11 ERA in six starts at AT&T Park. Hunter Pence is 12-for-35 (.343) with a home run against Arroyo, who threw at least 200 innings for the seventh time in his career this season.

Bumgarner set a career high in victories, but he was 2-2 with a 5.47 ERA in five September starts and hasn’t pitched into the seventh inning since Aug. 20. He’s 1-2 with a 8.56 ERA in four career outings against Cincinnati, including his one start this season when he tossed his first complete-game shutout on June 28. He’s 31-4 in his career when the Giants score at least three runs.

WALK-OFFS

1. In the 68 previous Division Series beginning in 1995, the Game 1 winner advanced to the League Championship Series 48 times (71 percent).

2. Latos' relief appearance Saturday was the first of his career after 105 major-league starts.

3. If the Reds have to replace Cueto on the NLDS roster, he would be ineligible for the National League Championship Series.

About Units and “ROI”

Units are a standardized measurement used to determine the size of each of your bets relative to your bankroll. For example, if you have a bankroll of $200 and you bet 5% of your bankroll each time, each of your units is worth $10. A bettor with a $2000 bankroll who bets 5% per bet has units of $100. We use the number of units to standardize the amount the trend is up or down across different bet amounts.

ROI is the best indicator of success and measures how much you bet vs. how much you profited. Any positive ROI is good in sports betting with great long-term bettors sitting in the 5-7% range.
