Dejounte Murray posted a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds on Friday as the San Antonio Spurs snapped a two-game losing streak, beating the host Orlando Magic 102-89.
Devin Vassell, whom the Spurs selected with 11th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft out of Florida State University, had 12 of the Spurs' 35 bench points. Vassell totaled a team-high 19 points in San Antonio's 123-97 home win over Orlando on opening night.
Keldon Johnson scored 20 points and Derrick White finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds as the Spurs played for the second time without center Jakob Poeltl, who is in the league's health and safety protocol.
Thaddeus Young (12) and Doug McDermott (10) also scored in double figures for the Spurs, while Murray had seven assists and three steals.
Cole Anthony's 21 points topped five players in double figures for Orlando, which lost for the eighth time in 10 games and fell to 0-4 at home. Wendell Carter Jr. had 13 points and 10 rebounds and Mo Bamba contributed 12 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots.
Rookie Jalen Suggs scored 12 points and R.J. Hampton had 11 points off the bench for Orlando, which went 12-for-41 (29.3 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc.
The Spurs took a 72-62 lead into the fourth quarter, and the Magic closed within 81-73 on Anthony's 3-pointer with 7:53 remaining. Murray countered with a jumper in the lane and Johnson added a one-handed dunk off one of Orlando's 18 turnovers to make it 85-73 with 7:07 left.
San Antonio held a 30-20 lead after the opening quarter with the help of a 17-2 run. White's 3-pointer upped the advantage to 30-16 with 1:08 to go in the period.
The teams combined for only 35 points during a relatively cold-shooting second quarter. San Antonio went into intermission ahead 49-36 as Orlando shot 32 percent from the floor (15-for-47) -- including a 3-for-17 mark from 3-point range -- in the first half.
