Anthony Edwards scored 24 points and fellow freshman Sahvir Wheeler had 19 to lead Georgia to a 91-72 victory over Western Carolina Tuesday night in the season opener for both teams at Athens, Ga.
Edwards broke up open a close game with a pair of 3-pointers within a minute, extending Georgia's lead to 71-63. Western Carolina never threatened after that.
Mason Faulkner scored 21 points and Carlos Dotson 17 for Catamounts of the Southern Conference. Dotson also had 15 rebounds.
The 6-foot-5, 225-pounds Edwards, Georgia's highest-profiled recruit since Dominique Wilkins, added nine rebounds and three assists.
Dotson scored 14 points to help the Catamounts build a 38-37 halftime lead. The Bulldogs shot 36.4 percent (12 of 33) during the first 20 minutes.
Edwards had 12 first-half points despite starting 3 of 9 from the field.
Before the game, Georgia coach Tom Crean announced that senior guard Jordan Harris will be suspended until Dec. 20. "This is an internal matter, and as you know, I'm limited in what I can say," Crean said. "Jordan is a valued member of thus team, and we look forward to his return to action."
