Sam Merrill had a game-high 21 points and No. 15 Utah State's defense limited UTSA to 28.6-percent shooting from the field as the Aggies pulled away in the final 10 minutes for an 82-50 win on Monday night at Logan, Utah.
Diogo Brito scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half for Utah State (5-0). Brock Miller scored 10 points. Justin Bean and Alphonso Anderson had 11 rebounds, while Kuba Karwowski grabbed 10.
The Aggies outrebounded UTSA 55-36 and outscored the Roadrunners 46-16 in the paint.
UTSA (0-5) was led by Jhivvan Jackson's 15 points, followed by Eric Czumbel with 12 and Keaton Wallace with 10.
After the Roadrunners cut the lead to 55-43 with 10:27 left on a Jackson jumper, Utah State pulled away for good with a 15-3 run. A 3-pointer by Anderson capped the stretch with 6:42 remaining, giving the Aggies a 70-46 lead.
Utah State made three 3-pointers in that game-clinching stretch, all by different players -- Miller, Brito and Anderson. The Aggies attempted 30 shots from 3-point range but made only nine.
Utah State had trouble building on its 41-29 halftime lead until the 15-3 run. The Roadrunners cut the lead to 10 points with 13:53 remaining in regulation but they could not get closer.
UTSA shot only 27.3 percent (9 of 33) from the field in the second half. The Roadrunners, who did not score in the last 4:31 of the game, were 3 of 14 from 3-point range in the half.
Anderson had nine rebounds in the second half, which nearly beat UTSA's total of 10 as a team.
The Aggies committed 16 turnovers but also forced UTSA into 15. Utah State outscored the Roadrunners 19-9 in points off turnovers.
