Ethan Thompson, making his 100th career start, scored a game-high 22 points as Oregon State rallied from a double-digit deficit to defeat Texas-San Antonio 73-61 in a nonconference game Wednesday afternoon in Corvallis, Ore.
Jarod Lucas and Warith Alatishe added 13 points apiece for the Beavers (3-3) and Zach Reichle scored 10. Reichle added six rebounds and four assists.
Cedrick Alley Jr. led UTSA (2-3) with 14 points.
The Beavers were able to severely limit the Roadrunners' high-scoring backcourt of Jhivvan Jackson and Keaton Wallace.
Jackson, who set school and Conference USA records last season when he averaged 26.8 points, was limited to 10 by the Beavers on 3-for-18 shooting. Jackson scored five of his points in the final 1:39 after OSU had pulled away. Wallace, who averaged 18.8 points last season, scored five on 1-of-11 shooting before fouling out in the final minute.
The Beavers missed their first nine shots from the field and fell behind 13-0 before Lucas' 3-pointer with 14:35 left in the first half. The Roadrunners hit the boards early, with five offensive rebounds turning into seven points in the opening five minutes.
After trailing 34-30 at the intermission, the Beavers didn't take the lead for good until Reichle's jump shot with 5:28 remaining to make it 53-52. A jumper by Alatishe and a layup and free throw by Dearon Tucker capped a 7-0 run by Oregon State.
The Roadrunners, who have lost all three of their games against NCAA Division I opponents, never got within four points the rest of the way.
The Beavers shot 40.4 percent from the field (21 of 52) compared to UTSA's 35 percent (21 of 69). OSU was 5 of 21 from 3-point range while the Roadrunners were 6 of 27. The Beavers outrebounded UTSA by 11 in the second half to pull even at 36-all on the boards.
