Ques Glover finished with 16 points and nine assists to lead Samford to a 78-77 win Thursday night over Oregon State at Corvallis, Ore.
Dashawn Davis' pullup jumper fell short at the buzzer for Oregon State, an Elite Eight team last season that has lost its last three games and is 1-3.
Warith Alatishe's dunk gave the Beavers a 75-73 lead with 1:27 remaining, but a 3-pointer by Cooper Kaifes and a layup by Jermaine Marshall put Samford ahead 78-75 with 38 seconds left.
Davis' jumper with 22 seconds remaining cut the lead to 78-77.
With 16 seconds left, after Oregon State made two fouls it had to give, Samford's Jaron Rillie turned the ball over by traveling while trying to inbound the ball.
Oregon State's Maurice Calloo missed a hook shot, but Glover turned the ball back over to the Beavers after committing a travel with 6 seconds left.
Davis took a pass near the left elbow and his lofty shot at the buzzer missed off the front of the rim.
Samford (3-1) shot 50.9 percent from the field, including a 6-of-9 performance from Marshall, who finished with 14 points.
Jaden Campbell also had 14 points and Kaifes finished with 11.
Oregon State was led by Alatishe's 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field.
Samford took a 42-32 lead at halftime and came close to leading by more as a halfcourt jumper by Campbell banked in at the buzzer but was ruled to leave his hand a split second late.
After Campbell's layup with 8:19 left put the Bulldogs ahead 64-56, Oregon State went on an 8-2 run.
Marshall responded with a 3-pointer to give Samford a 69-64 lead, but Davis and Alatishe scored on consecutive possessions to cut the margin to 69-68 with 3:44 left.
Oregon State took its first lead, 73-70, with 2:25 remaining on Alatishe's layup and subsequent free throw after he was fouled on the shot.
Glover answered with a 3-point play of his own with 2:09 left to tie the game.
