When Landry Shamet is on target from the outside, No. 9 Wichita State has been unbeatable. The sophomore guard will try to stay hot when the Shockers aim for a fifth consecutive win Sunday afternoon at home against American Athletic Conference doormat South Florida.

Lamet hit two of his four 3-point attempts en route to a team-high 18 points in Thursday's 81-63 rout of Houston, and the 6-4 standout is shooting 59.7 percent from beyond the arc in Wichita State's 12 wins, compared to a 1-of-10 showing in its two losses. "He's the real deal," Cougars coach Kelvin Sampson told reporters after his team was unable to stop the Shockers star. "That kid is the best player I've seen this year. They don't make them like that very often. Love his demeanor, love his poise. You give him the ball and he'll make you a better coach. They better appreciate him around here." The Bulls may be hard-pressed to hang with Wichita State after losing by 19 to Houston and then by 40 to SMU to open their AAC slate. They were more competitive Wednesday at East Carolina but faltered down the stretch in a 67-65 loss.

TV: 4 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network

ABOUT SOUTH FLORIDA (7-9, 0-3 AAC): Leading scorer Payton Banks (12.7 points per game) missed the blowout losses to Houston and SMU due to an illness and was able to play just 10 scoreless minutes in Wednesday's loss. Stephan Jiggetts, who is the team's only other double-digit scorer (11.6), was 1-for-17 from the floor while Banks was out but bounced back to score 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting versus the Pirates. Fellow senior Terrence Samuel leads the team in steals (1.3), ranks second in assists (3.4) and tied a season high with 15 points his last time out.

ABOUT WICHITA STATE (12-2, 2-0): Three others average double figures in scoring behind Shamet - a trio led by Shaquille Morris (12.0), who is also third on the team in rebounding (4.8) despite playing under 22 minutes per game. Junior Markis McDuffie, who averaged 11.5 points last season before missing the first 11 games of 2017-18 with a foot injury, buried a pair of 3-pointers en route to 11 points against Houston and could be ready to make a bigger impact going forward. "I was just hyped," McDuffie - who struggled to 2-of-10 shooting in his first two games back - told reporters. "I just kept telling myself that's what I do."

TIP-INS

1. Wichita State entered Friday ranked 27th in the country in scoring (84.4) while USF was 341st (63.9).

2. Shamet's 52.8 percent mark from 3-point range is fifth-highest in the country among those who have made at least 2.5 per game.

3. This marks the first meeting ever between the two programs.

PREDICTION: Wichita State 86, South Florida 60
