Toronto @ Calgary preview
McMahon Stadium
Last Meeting ( Aug 3, 2017 ) Calgary 41, Toronto 24
The Calgary Stampeders look to continue their dominance at home when the Toronto Argonauts visit Saturday. The Stampeders have won 13 consecutive games at McMahon Stadium, including three in 2017 by an average margin of 26.6 points, and hope to topple the Argonauts for the eighth consecutive time.
Calgary moved within one point of the West-Division leading Edmonton Eskimos after grinding out a 21-17 victory against the BC Lions in Week 9, and hope to take top spot for the first time this season by downing Toronto for the second time in August following a 41-24 victory three weeks ago. Ricky Ray returned with a bang as the Argonauts snapped a three-game slide with an emphatic 38-6 victory against the Montreal Alouettes. Ray showed no ill effects of a shoulder injury, which forced to him to miss the previous game, as he threw for 377 yards and four touchdowns to help Toronto reclaim first place in the East Division and the Argonauts hope the veteran quarterback can lead them to their first win against the Stampeders since Sept. 21, 2013. "I thought he did an excellent job," Toronto coach Marc Trestman told reporters. "We saw a glimpse of the team we want to become."
TV: 9 p.m. ET, TSN, ESPN3
ABOUT THE ARGONAUTS (4-5): S.J. Green was named one of the CFL's Top Performers of the Week after hauling in nine passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns against Montreal. Running back Anthony Coombs, who has 47 receptions for 426 yards and a touchdown in 2017, suffered a shoulder injury that requires surgery and is out indefinitely while Akwasi Owusu-Ansah is likely to miss Saturday's game after being carted off with a knee injury against the Alouettes. Toronto signed defensive back Khalid Wooten, who was drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the sixth round of 2013 NFL Draft, to the practice squad.
ABOUT THE STAMPEDERS (6-1-1): Jerome Messam rushed for 69 yards and a touchdown before suffering a knee injury in the fourth quarter against BC and is questionable for Saturday's clash. Bo Levi Mitchell failed to throw a touchdown pass for the first time in 19 games as he was hampered by a sore shoulder en route to an uncharacteristically pedestrian 15-of-31 performance against Lions, but is expected to recover in time to face Toronto. "He made every throw (in practice) but he has some soreness so let's not kid ourselves," Calgary coach Dave Dickenson told reporters. "I'm happy with what I saw and he's full-go."
