No. 2 Ohio State 42, San Diego State 7: Kenny Guiton passed for two touchdowns and rushed for one after replacing an injured Braxton Miller as the host Buckeyes routed the overmatched Aztecs.
Miller, who finished fifth in the 2012 Heisman Trophy balloting, sprained his left knee on the opening series and Ohio State didn’t miss a beat without its star quarterback. The Buckeyes (2-0) scored three first-quarter touchdowns while recording their 14th consecutive victory – the nation’s longest active winning streak.
Miller was injured on Ohio State’s seventh offensive play, but Dontre Wilson scampered in from 7 yards out on the ensuing snap. Guiton tossed a 27-yard scoring pass to Corey Brown with 6:23 left in the opening stanza and Jordan Hall tacked on a 4-yard scoring run with three seconds remaining in the period.
Guiton broke loose on a 44-yard scoring run to make it 28-0 with 5:33 left in the first half and Rod Smith added a 1-yard scoring run a couple of minutes later. Guiton connected with Brown on a 24-yard scoring aerial with 4:34 left in the third quarter to boost Ohio State’s lead to 42-0.
San Diego State (0-2) broke the shutout with 1:41 left in third quarter on Quinn Kaehler’s 2-yard pass to Chad Young. Kaehler was 22-of-36 for 216 yards and one interception in his first action as a major-college quarterback.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Miller was cleared to return but Ohio State coach Urban Meyer elected to keep him out due to the lopsided margin. In his place, Guiton was 19-for-28 for 152 yards and rushed for 83. … San Diego State QB Adam Dingwell was pulled after misfiring on his first five passes – including his fifth interception of the season. He was picked off four times in the Aztecs’ 40-19 season-opening loss to FCS opponent Eastern Illinois. … Ohio State is 68-7 at home since the start of the 2002 season.
