No. 5 Oregon 51, No. 22 Utah 27: Marcus Mariota passed for 239 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another 114 yards and a score as the visiting Ducks held off a second-half push from the Utes.
Royce Freeman finished with 99 of the 269 rushing yards for the Ducks (9-1, 6-1 Pac-12). Dwayne Stanford caught two touchdown passes from Mariota and tight end Pharaoh Brown caught the other for Oregon.
Utah quarterback Travis Wilson did not start the game but finished with 297 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Kaelin Clay caught five passes for 152 yards and running back Devontae Booker had eight receptions for 110 yards and a TD for the Utes (6-3, 3-3), who have lost two in a row.
The Utes managed to cut a 24-7 deficit to 30-27 on Wilson’s second TD pass of the second half, a 13-yarder to Westlee Tonga with 11:48 left, but the Ducks came back with a 34-yard TD pass from Mariota to Stanford on second-and-25 to push the lead back to 10. Andy Phillips, who made two field goals earlier in the game for Utah, then hit the right upright from 48 yards out and Oregon sealed the win with Mariota’s 1-yard TD run with 4:51 left.
A big momentum swing occurred on the first play of the second quarter, when Clay looked to be finishing off a 79-yard touchdown reception from Wilson, but Clay dropped the ball on the 1-yard line as he began to celebrate the touchdown. Oregon defensive back Erick Dargan picked the ball up after a couple seconds, was stripped of it by a Utah player and Joe Walker then picked up the loose ball ran 100 yards for a touchdown, tying the score at 7.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Kendal Thompson got the start over Wilson at quarterback but left in the first quarter with a left leg injury. … Oregon C Hroniss Grasu, who was making his 50th consecutive start for the Ducks, left with a leg injury with about 11 minutes left in the game, and Brown was taken off on a cart following Mariota’s final rushing touchdown. … Oregon is 32-0 under Mariota when scoring at least 30 points.
