ST. LOUIS -- By stringing together consecutive wins for the first time this year, the St. Louis Rams find themselves in fairly rarified air by their recent low standards.
Getting another big game from rookie running back Todd Gurley and two touchdowns from wide receiver Tavon Austin, St. Louis notched a 27-6 win over the shorthanded San Francisco 49ers on Sunday at Edward Jones Dome.
Gurley compiled 133 yards on 20 rushes, including a 71-yard touchdown jaunt up the middle with 10:25 left in the second quarter to give the Rams a 10-3 lead. It was Gurley's fourth straight game of more than 125 yards, making him the first rookie since 2005 to accomplish that feat.
Austin ran for a 2-yard score with 18 seconds remaining in the half, upping St. Louis' advantage to 20-6. He then accounted for the only score of a desultory second half, zipping 66 yards with a screen pass at the 8:34 mark of the fourth quarter.
Quarterback Nick Foles completed 14 of 23 passes for 191 yards as the Rams improved to 4-3, marking the first time since 2006 they have been over .500 this late in the season.
St. Louis also got a 38-yard field goal from kicker Greg Zuerlein as well as a first-quarter safety when linebacker James Laurinaitis tackled running back Mike Davis in the end zone.
San Francisco (2-6) fell for the sixth time in seven games as its offense flailed to no avail, missing running back Carlos Hyde (foot) and wide receiver Anquan Boldin (hamstring).
That left quarterback Colin Kaepernick to mostly go it alone against the Rams' dangerous front seven and it predictably didn't go well. Kaepernick completed 20 of 40 passes for 162 yards while absorbing three sacks and getting pressured consistently.
Phil Dawson booted field goals of 54 and 26 yards in the first half for the 49ers, which finished with just 189 yards and 11 first downs while committing 13 penalties for 93 yards and punting 10 times.
NOTES: San Francisco RBs Reggie Bush (knee) and Mike Davis (hand) left the game and weren't able to return. The team was down to Kendall Gaskins at running back by game's end. ... St. Louis entered Sunday's game tied for the NFL lead in fumble recoveries with eight. ... The 49ers also lost TE Garrett Celek (concussion), backup SS L.J. McCray (knee) and P Bradley Pinion (calf) to game-ending injuries.
