Chiefs 17, Bills 13: Jamaal Charles ran for 98 yards and a touchdown as Kansas City took over in the fourth quarter to overcome host Buffalo.
Alex Smith went 17-of-29 for 177 yards and ran for the winning touchdown for the Chiefs (6-3), who have won four straight. Dwayne Bowe hauled in eight passes for 93 yards and the defense forced three fumbles for Kansas City.
Kyle Orton completed 29-of-48 passes for 259 yards and a touchdown but had a short pass to rookie Sammy Watkins fall incomplete at the Chiefs 15-yard line with just over two minutes left. Chris Hogan caught a 25-yard TD pass and Anthony Dixon ran for 62 yards for the Bills (5-4).
Kansas City finally found the end zone with 13:30 left in the game, when Charles took a pitch in the backfield and shot through the hole before outracing the defense for a 39-yard score that cut the deficit to 13-10. A muffed punt was recovered by Anthony Sherman and the Chiefs needed two plays to take advantage as Smith wrapped around the left end for an 8-yard TD with 8:59 to play.
The Bills struck first on Orton’s TD pass to Hogan in the first quarter and turned a recovered fumble into a 26-yard field goal in the second to make it 10-3 at the half. Dan Carpenter’s 21-yard kick with 3:06 left in the third quarter pushed the advantage to 10 points.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Buffalo RB Fred Jackson (groin) returned from a two-game absence and totaled 49 yards from scrimmage. … Bills DE Jarius Wynn left the game in the second half with a knee injury. … Chiefs RB Cyrus Gray also left the contest with a knee injury and did not return.
