ST. LOUIS – Running back Todd Gurley's 49-yard run in the third quarter led to his go-ahead touchdown two plays later and the St. Louis Rams snapped a five-game losing streak with a 21-14 decision over the Detroit Lions.
The loss eliminated the 4-9 Lions from playoff contention.
Gurley's 5-yard score at the 3:57 mark of the period capped an 80-yard drive, nearly equaling the Rams' total yardage to that point. Prior to that possession, they managed only 111 yards and seven first downs in their first game under interim offensive coordinator Rob Boras, who replaced the fired Frank Cignetti on Monday.
St. Louis (5-8) added a 91-yard touchdown drive on its next possession, with Gurley finishing it on a 15-yard run with 12:14 left that saw him cut from left to right, then dive at an angle to get inside the pylon.
Gurley finished with 140 yards on 16 carries, his first 100-yard game since the Rams' last win on Nov. 1 against San Francisco. He was held to 13 yards on seven carries in the first half.
Quarterback Case Keenum, who returned to the lineup after missing two games with a concussion, completed 14 of 22 passes for 124 yards with an interception.
St. Louis' defense played without cornerback Janoris Jenkins (concussion), as well as defensive end Robert Quinn and safety T.J. McDonald, who both suffered season-ending injuries last week.
But tackle Aaron Donald picked up the slack, sacking quarterback Matthew Stafford three times and drawing a holding penalty with relentless pressure up the middle.
Stafford completed 30 of 46 passes for 245 yards and two touchdowns to wide receiver Golden Tate. However, Stafford also tossed a second quarter interception that cornerback Trumaine Johnson returned 58 yards for the game's first score.
Detroit (4-9) had a chance to tie the game after recovering an onside kick with 2:03 remaining, but Stafford's fourth-down pass for tight end Eric Ebron fell incomplete with 1:40 left.
NOTES: Detroit TE Brandon Pettigrew (knee) left the game in the second quarter and didn't return. He had one catch for seven yards. ... St. Louis WR Wes Welker's 11-yard reception in the fourth quarter was the 900th catch of his career, making him the 20th player in NFL history to accomplish that feat. … The Rams became the first team in five games to rush for more than 70 yards against the Lions.
