JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Jaguars used three lengthy scoring plays of 49 yards or more in a little more than four minutes and Blake Bortles threw three, second-half touchdown passes to rout the AFC South Division co-leader Indianapolis Colts by a 51-16 score on Sunday.
The scoring surge started late in the first half when Jaguars defensive end Andre Branch knocked the ball out of Indianapolis quarterback Matt Hasselback's hands before scooping it up and going 49 yards for a touchdown.
On Jacksonville's first play of the second half, Bortles hit Allen Hurns with a sideline toss that he caught near midfield. He avoided two Colts defenders, and tight-roped down the sideline for an 80-yard scoring play. When the Colts went three-and-out on their next possession, punter Pat McAfee kicked to Jaguars returner Rashad Green. The rookie from Florida State headed up-field, got two good blocks and went 73 yards to the end zone. That hiked the Jaguars lead to 23-12 with just under 12 minutes left in the third quarter.
Bortles took over after that and led the Jaguars on three consecutive long scoring drives. The first was an 80-yard march in 8 plays and finished with a 4-yard pass to Allen Robinson. It was Bortles' 10th touchdown pass in the last three weeks, the most by a Jaguars quarterback ever during a three-game stretch.
Jacksonville went on to add two more touchdowns after that as they topped the 50-point mark for the first time ever in a regular season game. The Jaguars all-time scoring record is 62 points set in a playoff game against Miami in January of 1999. Both teams scored on a quarterback fumble in the first half. The Colts' Robert Mathis recovered the ball in the end zone after it went through the hands of Bortles on a hard, high snap from center Stephen Wisnewski. That gave the Colts a 13-3 lead with 1:56 left in the half.
Indianapolis regained possession moments later when the Jaguars went three-and-out. But on the first play, Branch's game-turning play made it 13-9 at halftime after a missed extra point
