Jets 20, Dolphins 7: Geno Smith rushed for a touchdown and fellow rookie Dee Milliner recorded two of the three interceptions thrown by Ryan Tannehill as visiting New York eliminated Miami from postseason consideration.
Rookie defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson recorded his second rushing touchdown of the season for the Jets (8-8), who after the game announced coach Rex Ryan would return next season. Ryan's job may have saved by virtue of the Jets winning three of their final four games.
Mike Wallace made a 5-yard touchdown catch for his fourth score in six weeks as the Dolphins (8-8) failed to secure their first playoff appearance since 2008. A woeful offense was to blame as Miami mustered a total of seven points in a pair of losses to end the season.
After being benched in New York's 23-3 home loss to the Dolphins on Dec. 1, Smith (17-of-27, 190 yards) gave the Jets a 14-7 lead late in the second quarter by rushing up the middle for a 7-yard score. The Miami native bulled his way past linebacker Dannell Ellerbe for the final three feet, resulting in his sixth rushing touchdown.
Nick Folk missed a 35-yard field-goal attempt early in the fourth quarter but redeemed himself from the same distance with 4:18 to play. Veteran cornerback Ed Reed reeled in his 64th career interception on the Dolphins' ensuing drive and Folk converted from 26 yards out to cap the scoring.
GAME NOTEBOOK: After a lackluster first quarter, Wallace gained a step on Milliner and hauled in a touchdown pass over the middle early in the second. ... Miami WR Brian Hartline suffered a knee injury on the tail end of a 25-yard reception in the first quarter. Hartline, who did not return, became the fifth WR in team history to post back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. ... Richardson's two rushing touchdowns are the most by a defensive lineman since Chicago's William "The Refrigerator" Perry had a pair during the 1985 season.
