Last Meeting ( Nov 4, 2018 ) N.Y. Jets 6, Miami 13

The New York Jets have seen everything from ghosts to ghastly play this season, perhaps explaining why they only have one win to their credit. Adam Gase's current club will look to double that total and keep his former team from notching its first on Sunday when the struggling AFC East rivals meet in Miami.

"It's not fun. Nobody is pulling us out of this. We have to do it. No one else is coming to save us," said Gase, who saw the Jets answer a surprising 24-22 victory over Dallas on Oct. 13 with lopsided losses to New England (33-0) and Jacksonville (29-15). Sam Darnold, who unintentionally admitted to being overwhelmed during the nationally televised pummeling by the Patriots, has thrown seven interceptions over the last two games and was sacked eight times in the jolting by the Jaguars. Former Jets castoff Ryan Fitzpatrick is expected to be under center for moribund Miami, which saw an early two-touchdown lead go by the boards in a 27-14 setback at Pittsburgh on Monday. "We have to continue fighting. That's just the place we are at right now," said the 36-year-old Fitzpatrick, who threw for 43 touchdowns during his stint in New York in 2015-16.

ABOUT THE JETS (1-6): Tuesday's NFL trade deadline came and went with Pro Bowl safety Jamal Adams and wideout Robby Anderson taking distinctly different views of the proceedings. Adams took issue with Joe Douglas for having his name dangled in trade talks while Anderson publicly praised the general manager for keeping him apprised of the situation. Adams has recorded three sacks and a forced fumble in four career meetings with Miami while Anderson has three touchdowns in his past five against the Dolphins. Le'Veon Bell has yet to eclipse 70 yards on the ground this season heading into a tilt versus Miami's 31st-ranked rush defense (160.4 yards per game).

ABOUT THE DOLPHINS (0-7): Miami isn't just losing in the standings, as the club placed former Pro Bowl cornerback Xavien Howard on injured reserve this week, adding to a litany of issues in the team's secondary. "It's unfortunate. He's obviously one of our top players. You never want to see anyone get injured or deal with things," coach Brian Flores said of Howard, who shared the NFL lead with seven interceptions in 2018. Mark Walton recorded 54 scrimmage yards against the Steelers on the same day that the Dolphins sent fellow running back Kenyan Drake to Arizona for a conditional 2020 draft pick. DeVante Parker had a season-high six catches versus Pittsburgh and 18 with three touchdowns during a four-game stretch while promising Preston Williams has an NFL second-best 27 receptions among rookie wideouts this season.

EXTRA POINTS

1. The loser of Sunday's contest will be mathematically eliminated from AFC East contention should New England defeat Baltimore later in the day.

2. New York TE Chris Herndon, who played collegiately at Miami, could make his 2019 debut in the Hurricanes' home stadium.

3. The Dolphins have been outscored 130-20 in the second half this season, marking the second-worst differential through seven games in NFL history (Denver, minus-114, in 1966).

PREDICTION: Dolphins 19, Jets 17
