The New York Giants and Washington Redskins both have a long ways to go to return to the days when they routinely were battling for supremacy in the NFC East. The longtime rivals are buried in the basement of the division and sport the worst records in the conference as they prepare to square off for the second time this season on Sunday at Washington.

New York ended a nine-game slide with a 36-20 home win over Miami last weekend, its first win since rolling to a 24-3 victory over the Redskins in Week 4. Daniel Jones, sidelined the past two weeks by an ankle injury, practiced fully Thursday and appears on track to start against Washington and fellow rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins on Sunday. Jones, drafted sixth overall this year, improved to 2-0 as a starter while No. 15 pick Haskins came off the bench in the earlier meeting this season. “His overall game, he’s getting better every week," Redskins coach Bill Callahan said of Haskins, noting that his quarterback has made "light years" of progress since the first matchup.

ABOUT THE GIANTS (3-11): Jones threw for 225 yards and a touchdown in the first meeting but he also was intercepted twice -- part of a season-long issue with turnovers that includes an NFL-leading 10 lost fumbles. Second-year running back Saquan Barkley missed the first matchup due to injury but is coming off his first 100-yard rushing performance since Week 3 and also turned in a career-best output at Washington in December 2018 with 170 yards and a touchdown on only 14 carries. Rookie Darius Slayton has emerged as a big-play weapon with 44 catches for eight scores, including three in the last two weeks, but New York ranks 26th versus the pass (261.8 yards).

ABOUT THE REDSKINS (3-11): Haskins was picked off three times in the first meeting and his overall numbers (five touchdowns, seven interceptions) are pedestrian at best, but he is coming off his best game with a season-high 261 yards and two scores in a last-minute loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Running back Adrian Peterson has come on strong down the stretch, scoring in each of his last three games and averaging 80.3 yards rushing in that span, while rookie Terry McLaurin leads the team with 51 receptions and seven touchdowns after hauling in a 75-yard scoring strike last week. Washington ranks 28th against the run, surrendering 136.4 yards per game.

2. Redskins DE Matt Ioannidis has six sacks in his last six games.

3. Giants WR Sterling Shepard had seven catches for 76 yards in Week 4 and nine for 111 yards last week.
