Toronto Maple Leafs vs New Jersey Devils Match Player Stats On Feb 01, 2022

Mitchell Marner scored twice, giving him goals in seven consecutive games, and had two assists as the Toronto Maple Leafs completed a home-and-home sweep of the New Jersey Devils with a 7-1 victory Tuesday night in Newark, N.J.

Auston Matthews, who had a hat trick in the Maple Leafs' 6-4 victory a day earlier in Toronto, added a goal and an assist, as did Pierre Engvall, Michael Bunting and David Kampf. Jason Spezza also scored for the Maple Leafs, who won their fifth in a row.

Toronto goaltender Jack Campbell, who was pulled in the first period Monday after allowing three goals on nine shots, made 31 saves.

Jack Hughes scored the lone goal for the Devils, who have lost six in a row and nine of their past 10. Goalie Jon Gillies stopped 22 of 28 shots through two periods before being relieved by Akira Schmid for the third.

The Maple Leafs scored four times in the first period and twice more in the second to take a 6-0 lead.

Spezza opened the scoring 2:13 into the game after Gillies misplayed the puck behind the net. Engvall collected the puck and found a wide-open Spezza just outside the top of the crease for a one-timer.

Matthews made it 2-0 at 8:38 as Marner won a battle along the boards and fed him for a wrist shot from the high slot that found the upper right corner of the net.

Just 26 seconds later, Toronto's Ilya Mikheyev outraced Devils defenseman P.K. Subban down right wing and fed Kampf for a wrist shot from the top of the right faceoff circle.

Marner made it 4-0 at 15:31 after Matthews stole the puck from defenseman Damon Severson and fed him between the circles.

It could've been worse for the Devils, as Gillies stopped Marner on a first-period breakaway.

Hughes thwarted Campbell's shutout bid at 3:31 of the third on a wrist shot from the top of the right faceoff circle.

The Devils played without coach Lindy Ruff, whose father, Leeson, died Friday. Assistant Alain Nasreddine filled in for Ruff.
