Last Meeting ( Jan 20, 2019 ) Anaheim 0, NY Islanders 3
The New York Islanders try to extend their franchise-record point streak to 18 games as they continue their trek through the Golden State with a contest against the struggling Anaheim Ducks on Monday. New York had its five-game winning streak snapped with a 2-1 overtime loss at San Jose on Saturday, falling to 15-0-2 since losing three of four to start the season.
“This team comes to work, comes to compete every night,” Islanders coach Barry Trotz told reporters. “We understand the importance of the right way to play.” New York entered Sunday allowing the third-fewest goals in the league at 2.428 per game with the help of goaltenders Thomas Greiss and Semyon Varlamov, who have alternated starts this season with the former due to play Monday. Anaheim has lost eight of its last nine games (1-5-3) after a 6-2 setback at Tampa Bay on Saturday, allowing 16 goals during its three-game losing streak (0-2-1). "I don't think any of our players should look left or right or up or down for somebody to do their job," Ducks coach Dallas Eakins told reporters. "It's quite simple - you're responsible for your minutes and that's it. And if you're looking around for somebody else to do your job then we should probably be looking for someone else to do your job."
TV: 10 p.m. ET, MSG Plus (New York), Prime Ticket (Anaheim)
ABOUT THE ISLANDERS (16-3-2): Mathew Barzal paces the club with nine goals, 20 points and a plus-14 rating. Anthony Beauvillier (eight goals, 16 points) failed to score for the first time in four straight games Saturday. Greiss is 9-1-0 with a 2.07 goals-against average and .934 save percentage while Varlamov is 7-2-2, 2.63, .913.
ABOUT THE DUCKS (10-11-3): Captain Ryan Getzlaf, who has a goal and four assists during a four-game point streak, is disappointed with his club. "We've got to be committed to it for 60 minutes because the proof is there," Getzlaf told reporters. "High flying team that likes to play offense and they got little, 5-foot-10 guys shooting at the back of our net from inside our crease. If we're not going to be big enough and strong enough to play in front our net we're never going to win anything." Derek Grant scored a short-handed goal Saturday, giving the Ducks five this season - tied with Vegas for the league lead entering Sunday.
