Last Meeting ( Feb 15, 2019 ) New Jersey 5, Minnesota 4
The New Jersey Devils try to match a season high when they seek their second straight victory Tuesday against the visiting Minnesota Wild. New Jersey defeated Detroit 5-1 on Saturday for its third win in five games and while Jack Hughes - the No. 1 pick in the 2019 draft - was kept off the scoresheet for the third straight game, the newly formed line of Hughes, Wayne Simmonds and rookie Jesper Boqvist has impressed Devils coach John Hynes.
“Really like that line,'' Hynes told reporters. "I think Jack’s played really well the last two games. His competitive level’s been high, he’s skating, he’s been noticeable, puck’s been on his stick." Hughes has four goals, 10 points and a minus-7 rating while averaging 16 minutes, 3 seconds of ice time through 22 NHL games. Minnesota extended its point streak to six games (3-0-3) after a 3-2 overtime loss to the Rangers in New York on Monday with Alex Stalock making 28 saves in his fourth straight start as No. 1 goaltender Devan Dubnyk attends to a family matter. Kaapo Kahkonen, who was recalled from AHL Iowa on an emergency basis, is expected to make his NHL debut Tuesday with coach Bruce Boudreau telling reporters: “I have no problem playing him whenever the opportunity arises.”
