Last Meeting ( Nov 9, 2018 ) NY Rangers 2, Detroit 3

The Detroit Red Wings are mired in their longest losing streak of the season while the New York Rangers have matched their longest skid, taking the luster off the upcoming matchup between the Original Six rivals. The Red Wings and Rangers are each sitting in seventh place in their respective divisions entering Thursday's game in Detroit.

“Mentally we have been kicked a little bit and we just have to keep getting back up,” coach Jeff Blashill said after Detroit dropped a 4-3 overtime decision at Colorado on Tuesday to extend its losing streak to eight games (0-5-3). The Red Wings have won three straight against New York -- with each going beyond regulation -- in a tight series that has seen 12 of the last 13 games decided by one goal. The Rangers keep coming out on the wrong end of narrow decisions during their five-game slide (0-2-3), suffering their fourth one-goal defeat in that span in Tuesday's 1-0 loss at Dallas. "Since I've got here, four games they've all been close," recently acquired Brendan Lemieux said. "Just inches right now. But our team resilience right now is really good."

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, MSG (New York), FS Detroit

ABOUT THE RANGERS (27-28-11): While New York struggled on the power play by failing on all four chances to "put us behind the eight-ball," according to coach David Quinn, the penalty-killing units continued their strong play. The Rangers limited Dallas to a total of five shots while snuffing out five short-handed situations to improve to 10 of 11 on the penalty kill over the past three games. "I certainly was really proud of our penalty killers, I thought we did a heck of a job, killing and competing," Quinn said.

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (23-33-10): Rookie Filip Zadina, playing in his fourth career game, scored his first NHL goal on the power play to put Detroit ahead with just over two minutes to play Tuesday. The No. 6 overall pick in the 2018 draft, Zadina recorded a team-high five shots on goal. "He's got the right ingredients to be a good player in this league," Blashill said. "The games he's played up here in so far up he's taken steps in the right direction each game. The biggest key in this league is you've got to keep taking steps forward."

OVERTIME

1. New York has had a league-high 36 games decided by one goal.

2. Red Wings F Dylan Larkin scored the OT winner versus the Rangers on Nov. 9, his only goal in 10 games against them.

3. Rangers G Henrik Lundqvist is 7-4-5 with a 2.01 goals-against average and four shutouts versus Detroit.

PREDICTION: Rangers 3, Red Wings 2
