My analysis
Before June 12, the Indiana Fever's offensive rating stood at No. 10 in the WNBA at 95.9. Since June 12, that offensive rating has stood at No. 2 in the league at 112.0.

What happened?

It was less about the Fever and more that they played five straight games against three of the lesser defenses in the WNBA; Chicago, Washington, and Atlanta seem respectable in terms of defensive ratings, ranking Nos. 5-7, respectively, but look deeper than that. The gap between the Sky and No. 4 is greater than the gap between the Dream and No. 9.

The top-four defenses in the WNBA are a significant cut above.

When not facing those quality defenses, Indiana plays noticeably better, averaging 89.6 points in those five games. But when facing those top-four defenses, the Fever have averaged 76.5 points in eight games. Eight of Indiana’s first 13 games were against those defenses, back when the Fever offensive rating ranked No. 10 in the WNBA. That offensive rating would currently rank No. 11 in the league.

That is how the Fever fare against quality defenses rather than middling ones.

The first step to greater success is to beat the teams you should beat. Indiana did that, going 4-1 against those five middling defenses, the sole loss coming by a point. If Indiana’s offense disproportionately struggles against the best defenses in the WNBA, it is only logical to realize Caitlin Clark struggles against them, as well. In those eight games, she has averaged 14.75 points. In her 10 other games, she has averaged 17.5.

More to the point, Clark has fallen short of this prop in her last five games against quality defenses, shooting 31.4% from deep in those five games. In all eight games against quality defenses, Clark has hit 31.7% of her 3-pointers. In her 10 other games, she has hit 37.8%.

Betting against Clark may not be popular, but against a quality defense like Seattle’s, it is the proper bet, especially considering opponents take only 21.1 threes per game against the Storm, No. 3 in the WNBA, and make just 32.8% of them, No. 4 in the WNBA.
